The part of Budapest called Inner Lipótváros started to gain an urban character from the first decades of the nineteenth century. The earliest buildings that are still standing here were constructed as urban palaces for noble families. Many of these were designed by the most prominent architects of Neo-Classicism in Hungary. The “Monument Building” of the CEU complex was originally constructed for the Festetics family in the 1820-30s, by Mihály Pollack, later architect of the Hungarian National Museum. The university last year also moved into the building at 13 Nador Street designed by József Hild. The former Marczibányi Palace at 7 Október 6 Street houses some units of CEU now. The guided tour takes the visitors into this palace as well, which was designed by József Hild too, and preserved some original details – frescoes, furniture – on the upper levels otherwise closed from the broader public.

The downtown complex of CEU has been complemented in 2016 with a new building at 15 Nador Street designed by the award-winning Irish O'Donnel - Tuomey Architects. The Neo-Classicist urban palace at 13 Nador Street originally designed by József Hild was also renovated by last autumn. It was an exciting challenge for the designing architects to create a modern university unit into a block that includes historical monuments as well. They also had to find a solution how to incorporate the Neo-Classicist palace that had been reconstructed several time, preserving and emphasizing what is left from the original values. The tour guides through the CEU campus starting from the Neo-Classicist Festetics Palace at 9 Nador Street, presenting the Art Nouveau, originally apartment house at 11 Nador Street. It continues to the freshly renovated Nador 13 and to the modern building at 15 Nador Street. The rooftop garden offers a unique view over the Danube.

Tour description

The building complex of CEU displays the characteristics of several architectural periods. It is an important set of built monuments in the Inner Lipótváros area of Budapest. The former Festetics Palace designed by Mihály Pollack (9 Nador Street) is a significant product of the Neo-Classicist style in the so-called Reform Era. The apartment house designed by two architects, Tibor Szivessy and Béla Jánszky (11 Nador Street) represents the vernacular trend of Hungarian Art Nouveau. The walk will end in the new building of the campus, finished in 2016, an award winning work by the Tuomey-O’Donnel architect office. Visitors will have a chance to discover how the built heritage of Budapest was taken into consideration when designing the new complex, and to admire the panorama of the Inner City from the roof garden of CEU.
The guided tour will be in English and in Hungarian.
